The Department of Poultry Diseases (DPD) comprises several subunits: Pathology and Bacteriology, Mycoplasma, Virology (which itself is sub-divided into Myxoviruses, Flaviviruses, Lymphoproliferative and Immunosuppressive viruses, and other viruses). Submissions to DPD include domesticated birds (chickens, turkeys, geese etc.), pet & game birds, and wild birds.
Functions of the DPD comprise : -
1. Diagnosis of diseases in commercial poultry and wild and pet birds, including zoonotic diseases that endanger people and diseases that may spread in poultry flocks.
2. Conducting applied and basic research, especially aplicative studies in diseases of domesticated birds and diagnosis, intended especially to prevent zoonotic and flock diseases.
3. Monitoring and diagnosis (together with the Poultry Disease Officer of the VSAH), including control of imported birds.
4. Fish diseases.
